Purple Eagles Drop Game at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CONN. – The Niagara women's basketball was defeated by Quinnipiac, 70-52, on Sunday afternoon.

"We got out to a really great start today, which was good to see especially after the slow start we had on Friday," said head coach Jada Pierce. "It was definitely tough for us to sustain. I felt good about the effort tonight. Unfortunately, the turnovers made the difference for us in this game."

Jayla Nichols led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 12 points, tying her career-high. Sam Lapszynski led the team in rebounding with a career-best 19 rebounds. She also had 11 points and recorded her eighth double-double of the season. Tiffany Corselli added 10 points and Kaylee Stroemple added nine. Jamie Sherburne led Niagara in assists with six.

The Purple Eagles came out looking hot to start the game. Quinnipiac struck first, but Niagara answered with a 10-0 run, which included 3-pointers from both Corselli and Stroemple. With less than a minute to go in the first quarter, Nichols hit two 3-point shots to put the Purple Eagles up 26-16.

Quinnipiac went on a run in the second quarter and going into halftime the Bobcats were ahead of the Purple Eagles, 38-30. The Purple Eagles opened the third quarter with 3-pointers from both Sherburne and Corselli, cutting the Bobcats' lead to four points, 40-36. The Bobcats, however, began to pull away and the third quarter ended with Quinnipiac in the lead, 55-43.

Despite baskets from Nichols, Sherburne and Lapszynski in the fourth quarter, the Purple Eagles were not able to overcome the Bobcats' lead.

The Purple Eagles play next on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 p.m. against Marist in the Gallagher Center.
