NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's basketball team was defeated by Marist, 82-68, on Friday night.
"The tale of the tape today, I felt, was the 3-point shooting," said Niagara head coach
Jada Pierce. "They were very hot in the first half and that was hard for us to overcome. I think we did a great job in the second half. We did outscore them, which was something positive to see, and we did outrebound them, but it all came back to not getting out on shooters. It's hard to beat a team if they go 12 for 19 from the three."
Kaylee Stroemple led the Purple Eagles in both scoring and rebounding. Stroemple had 18 points and 10 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season.
Jamie Sherburne added 11 points for the Purple Eagles, tying her career-high.
Sam Lapszynski and
Tiffany Corselli both had nine points and
Kharysma Bryant went a perfect 4-4 from the field and finished the night with eight points.
Niagara started the game looking confident on both offense and defense. With one minute left in the first, Sherburne hit a 3-point shot, but the quarter ended with Marist in the lead, 24-13. Baskets from
Taylor McKay and Bryant to open the second quarter put the Purple Eagles within five points of the lead, 24-19. Marist pulled away, however, and led 49-29 going into halftime.
The Purple Eagles outscored the Red Foxes 39-33 in the second half of the game and made a strong push for the lead. With a little over six minutes remaining in the game, a lay-up from
Taylor McKay put the Purple Eagles down by only 13, 70-57, but the Red Foxes would not relinquish their lead. Stroemple led Niagara in the second half with 10 points. Sherburne sank two more 3-pointers in the second half and added eight points.
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 14 against Rider at 2:00 p.m.
