Women’s Soccer Nets Three Goals in Win at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara Purple Eagles scored a season-high three goals in a 3-1 victory over the Fairfield Stags on Saturday afternoon.

Junior forward Emily Phillips put Niagara on the board in the early going with her first collegiate goal in the third minute. Senior forward Haillie Price dribbled to the near side and crossed it to the middle, where Phillips was there to bury it to put the Purple Eagles ahead.

Price gave Niagara a 2-0 advantage after a long shot in the 30th minute struck the left post and found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season. Price, who has matched her team-leading goal total from last season, currently leads the MAAC in goals. Price has now scored in three straight contests and five out of her last six.

Fairfield cut the lead in half with a long looping kick from Jackie Goudreault that beat the keeper to the near post in the 56th minute.

Niagara looked to add an insurance goal in the 65th minute, but the shot by junior forward Laura Ortiz was denied by the post. NU was able to notch its final goal in the 85th minute when sophomore forward Eva Bachmann kicked the ball through the Fairfield defender's legs and past the keeper for her first goal of the season.

Bachmann, Ortiz and Price led the Purple Eagles with four shots apiece. As a team, NU recorded a season-high 11 shots on goal.

"This was a great game for us, we played well defensively and offensively," head coach Peter Veltri said. "It was great to see goals scored by Emily, Haillie and Eva. We created some great chances and for the most part we dominated the game."

Niagara (3-3-2, 1-0-0 MAAC) returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 26 for a home match against the Iona Gaels at 1 p.m.
