NIAGARA UNIV., NY – The Niagara Purple Eagles fell to the Robert Morris Colonials in their 2015 season opener on Friday afternoon by a score of 1-0.
"We played really well today on both sides of the ball," said Niagara coach
Eric Barnes. "We dominated possession but failed to create enough quality chances in the final third."
Niagara (0-1-0) and Robert Morris (1-0-0) held each other in check in the first half, with the Colonials tallying the only shot on net.
The Purple Eagles almost took the lead in the 65th minute when freshman forward
Steve Pondeca blew past the defender and ripped a shot on target, but it was saved by Robert Morris' Brenden Alfery.
RMU's only shot on goal in the second half proved to be the difference, as Keane McIvor broke the scoreless tie in the 80th minute when he slid past the coverage and buried the ball in the back of the net, just out of the reach of Niagara goalkeeper
Joel Gerberich.
NU had an opportunity to get the equalizer in the final minute of play, but the shot by
Ryan Myers was blocked before it could reach the net.
"Despite the loss, we played the attractive brand of soccer we have been preaching all preseason, and for that, we have reason to be proud," Barnes said.
Niagara is back on the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 30 when the Purple Eagles host Duquesne at 1 p.m.
