Women's Lacrosse Suffers 13-7 Loss To Marist

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's lacrosse team fell 13-7 to the Marist Red Foxes on Wednesday afternoon at Niagara Field.

"We took a step forward defensively today and put ourselves in a position to make plays, we just didn't make enough of them," head coach Wendy Stone said.  "We played Marist much tougher than we have in the past, but need to continue working on finishing plays and taking care of the ball through the midfield.  We will continue to work to get better every day, and look forward to facing Quinnipiac on Saturday."

The Red Foxes (7-4, 3-1MAAC) got on the board first with a tally from Hayley Burke just under two minutes into the contest.  The Purple Eagles (4-9, 1-3 MAAC) answered with unassisted goal from senior Brittany Delano at the 26:36 mark to even the game at one apiece.

Marist went on a four-goal run over the following 20 minutes which was led by Allison Gionta who netted three goals, giving the Red Foxes a 5-1 lead. Taylor Wolf grabbed her 19th goal of the season to make it 5-2 before heading into intermission.

The visitors started the scoring in the second stanza after going on another hot streak, but Molly Gray found the back at the 22:21 mark to halt Marist's run.  The goal was a superb solo effort by the junior as she ran down the middle ripping a high shot for her eighth goal of the season.

Four minutes later, Grace Hunt scored a man down goal assisted by Erin Patenaude, however, the Red Foxes tallied two unassisted goals to go up, 11-4. Niagara then went on a 3-1 run but Gionta ended the contest with the last goal, giving Marist the 13-7 victory.

Sophomore goalie Andrea Francisco made a career-high 12 saves during the game.

Niagara hits the road on Saturday, April 11 as the Purple Eagles faceoff against the Quinnipiac Bobcats.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
