NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Purple Eagles took both games of their doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Senior Day Sunday. NU topped the Peacocks in extra innings, 4-3, in game one and held off Saint Peter's 7-6 in game two.
Prior to the game, Niagara honored its four seniors –
Ambur Farmer,
Desarae Maldonado,
Amanda Werth and
Katelyn Gruarin.
Niagara 4, Saint Peter's 3In game one Niagara opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third when
Sarah March singled home
Brianna Clark for the first run. Saint Peter's tied the game at 1-1 two innings later when Samantha Storms singled to left.
The Purple Eagles got two runs in the bottom of the fifth with two bases loaded walks, with RBIs contributed to Victora Bretz and
Ally Gay. Niagara took the 3-1 lead into the seventh, but the Peacocks tied it up on a Storms single that scored two runs, after a fielding error.
The game headed into extra innings and in the bottom of the eighth, the Purple Eagles loaded the bases for
Sarah March, who was hit by a pitch to force in the game-winning run.
Niagara 7, Saint Peter's 6The Peacocks (2-34, 1-18 MAAC) took an early lead in the first, when Storms single to left drove in Candice Koch. However, Niagara (4-32, 4-10 MAAC) got the run back in the bottom half when March drove in
Desarae Maldonado.
Saint Peter's retook the lead in the third when the Peacocks scored two more runs. The first coming when Nicole Olmedo stole a pair of bases in the inning and scored when Bretz threw the ball into left when trying to make the play at third. The second run came across when Francesca D'Amato singled home Lee Harrison.
Once again Niagara wouldn't take long to respond, scoring three in the bottom half of the third when
Victoria Bretz hit a bases clearing double to right to give the Purple Eagles the one run lead.
The lead would get as big as three for Niagara after
Chanelle Ward and March drove in one run each in the fourth for a 6-3 lead. The Peacocks chipped away at the deficit, getting two runs in the fifth, but Niagara tact on an insurance run and only allow one Peacock to cross the plate in the final two innings, finishing off their first sweep of the season.
Softball will finish the 2015 schedule on the road with the first stop at rival Canisius on Wednesday 3 p.m.
