Softball Swept In Battle Of The Bridge Doubleheader

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles dropped both games of their doubleheader against rival Canisius, 9-0 and 12-0, on Wednesday.

Niagara 0, Canisius 9 (5 innings)

Canisius took game one of the doubleheader in five innings, in part to a five-run fourth inning. The Golden Griffins broke the scoreless tie with one run in the second inning and added three more runs in the third inning. The Golden Griffins scored five runs on five hits while benefitting from two errors in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead.

Niagara left two runners on base in the second and fifth innings, though failed to score. In the second inning, Sarah March and Ambur Farmer reached base. In the fifth inning, Katelyn Gruarin and Desarae Maldonado were on base with one out, before two consecutive outs ended the game.

Niagara 0, Canisius 12 (5 innings)

Two big innings by Canisius (24-15, 13-3 MAAC) propelled the Golden Griffins to their first sweep of NU (4-34, 4-12 MAAC) since 2012. Canisius led 5-0 after three innings, including a four-run second inning, before scoring seven runs in the fourth inning as NU was held to one hit.

The Purple Eagles continue their season ending road trip with a doubleheader at Colgate on Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
