NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Purple Eagles dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against first place Manhattan, by the score of 12-0 and 11-3.
Manhattan 12, Niagara 0In game one Niagara couldn't get anything going against Manhattan pitcher Amy Bright, who had a complete game shutout, allowing one hit and striking out four. Niagara left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, but was unable to get another scoring opportunity.
At the plate, Manhattan had contributions up and down the lineup. The big blow was a grand slam in the fourth inning by Briana Matazinsky as part of a five-run inning to increase the lead to 12.
Senior
Katelyn Gruarin had the lone hit with a bunt single in the first.
Manhattan 11, Niagara 3In the second inning, Manhattan (23-12, 12-2 MAAC) scored the first two runs of the ball game on an error in right field. The Purple Eagles (2-32, 2-10 MAAC) scored in the bottom half of the inning, when
Sarah March came around to score from second on Gruarin's double down the left field line.
Manhattan's offense proved to be too much for NU, as it would add nine more runs, making the score 11-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In that half inning, Niagara loaded the bases, via an error by the shortstop, a walk, and a
Brianna Clark single.
Sarah March, then, came to the plate and singled up the middle scoring two Purple Eagles. However, NU left two runners on base to end the game.
Senior Day is tomorrow afternoon against Saint Peter's with first pitch for game one scheduled for 11:00am. Niagara will honor
Ambur Farmer, Desarea Maldonado,
Amanda Werth and
Katelyn Gruarin.
