Farrugia Leads NU Past Manhattan On Senior Day

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's lacrosse team scored a season-high in goals with an 18-12 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field on Senior Day.

Senior Carrie-Jo Farrugia and sophomore Taylor Wolf both set career-highs with six goals apiece while Farrugia added a team-high three assists as well. The Purple Eagles also got offensive contributions from Erin Patenaude, Hannah Barnett, Molly Gray, Jaclyn Schreiber, Cailyn Negus and Jillian Ford.

"Today was a total team effort and a great way to send the seniors out on Niagara Field," head coach Wendy Stone said.  "We will continue to work to clean up our play on both ends of the field heading into Wednesday's game against Siena."

Niagara (6-10, 3-4 MAAC) took an early lead with back-to-back goals from Wolf until Manhattan (3-13, 0-7) responded with two goals to tie the game at the 19:52 mark of the first stanza. With the score tied at 3-3, NU went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead with 12:23 remaining in the half. The Purple Eagles finished the period outscoring the Jaspers 2-1 for a 9-4 halftime lead.

Manhattan tallied the first two goals in the second halftime to come back within three scores, however, Niagara answered back with a goal from Negus with 26:06 left to play. The Jaspers scored again but Farrugia recorded her 30th goal of the season to give Niagara an 11-7 lead. The visitors then notched two more goals but would come no closer as NU clinched the 18-12 victory on Senior Day.

Niagara goaltender Andrea Francisco posted six saves in the game while her counterpart, Christin Fiorinelli, made nine saves against NU.

The Purple Eagles edged the Jaspers in shots (39-21), draw controls (17-15), ground balls (21-16) and caused turnovers (13-8).

Niagara wraps up the regular season on April 22 in Albany, N.Y.  as the Purple Eagles battle the Siena Saints at 3 p.m.
