Men’s Basketball Outlasts Quinnipiac In Double Overtime, 105-100

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles prevailed in double overtime to earn the program's first-ever win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 105-100, on Sunday at the Gallagher Center.

A game that saw 11 ties and 11 lead changes featured multiple players with both season and career highs, led by Dominique Reid's career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Karonn Davis dished out a career-high nine assists, while Cameron Fowler and Julian Richardson each had career-highs with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Ramone Snowden was in double figures for the ninth straight game with 18 points and had eight rebounds. Emile Blackman scored 17 points to be in double figures for the sixth straight game and added four assists.

"We got contributions from everybody," head coach Chris Casey said. "We talk all the time about you never when your moment is going to come and the only way you are prepared for those moments is to continue to work and that way you are ready."

The Purple Eagles, who led 35-25 with 5:27 left in the first half, went into halftime with a 41-39 lead. The second half was played in a six-point window as the lead changed four times. NU led 82-80 in the final seconds of the second half when Quinnipiac's Zaid Hearst tied the game with a tip-in with two seconds on the clock to force overtime.

Reid opened the first overtime with a layup before the Bobcats answered with five straight points to take an 87-84 lead with 2:43 remaining. Consecutive 3-pointers by Fowler and Snowden gave the Purple Eagles a 90-89 lead with 1:25 left in the extra session.

Quinnipiac answered on its next possession to take a 91-90 lead, and after an empty possession by NU, the Bobcats would make one of two free throws to lead 92-90 with 30 seconds left. On NU's next possession, Reid was fouled going to the basket and the freshman calmly sink two free throws to tie the game at 92-92. Niagara would get a stop on Quinnipiac's final possession to force a second overtime.

The second overtime was knotted at 96-96 with under a minute remaining when Fowler drained the go-ahead basket with his second triple of the game as the Purple Eagles led 99-96 with 52 seconds remaining.

The NU defense forced a turnover on the Bobcats' next possession as the Purple Eagles iced the game by going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. NU, which was playing in its first overtime and double overtime game since 2013, halted a nine-game losing streak.

"That was a great college basketball game. Both teams played extremely hard and both teams came up with made big plays," Casey said. "I'm proud of our guys the way they just kept coming. We had a couple of bad breaks at the end of regulation and overtime, but we didn't stop."

The Purple Eagles return to the court on Friday, Feb. 6, when they head to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to visit the Marist Red Foxes for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
