Price's Overtime Tally Lifts Niagara Over Canisius

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Haillie Price notched her 10th goal of the season and the only score of the game to lift the Niagara Purple Eagles over the archrival Canisius Golden Griffins in a thrilling, 1-0 double-overtime affair Wednesday night at Niagara Field.

Twenty-four seconds into the final frame, Laura Ortiz sent a diagonal pass to Price at the top of the 18-yard box. Price secured possession and took a touch in the box before roofing the clinical finish into the upper left netting for the dramatic victory.

"What a game," said head coach Peter Veltri.  "I thought we played very well tonight.  Anytime you play your rival you know it's going to be tough and tonight was no exception.  We knew that if we stayed patient that eventually we would be find the back the net. I thought defensively we were organized and limited them to only a few opportunities."

Niagara (8-5-2, 6-2-0 MAAC) dominated the 90 minutes of regulation but was unable to find the back of the net. The Purple Eagles put eight shots on frame compared to one for Canisius, and they had nine corner kicks compared to zero for the Golden Griffins (4-11-2, 2-6-0 MAAC) in regular time. For the game in its entirety, Niagara outshot Canisius 16-5, with the edge on shots-on-goal working nine to three in Niagara's favor.

Though Niagara held the ball throughout the majority of the game, it was Canisius with the best scoring chance before Price's golden-goal. With under eight minutes to play in regulation, Golden Griffin midfielder Ronja Gustafsson unleashed a 30-yard strike that nearly dipped down over goalkeeper Claire Feiertag. However, Feiertag dove back and got her fingertips on the shot, pushing the ball off the crossbar and out of the net.

Hayley Besaw had a game-high four shots and tied Ortiz and Price with a team-high two shots on net. Feiertag finished the game with three saves for her fifth clean sheet of the season.

Following the women's victory and the men's soccer 2-0 loss at Canisius, Niagara maintained a one-point lead over Canisius in the 2015-16 Battle of the Bridge competition, with the score now standing at 3-2 in favor of the Purple Eagles. The Battle of the Bridge is an all-sports competition between cross-town rivals Niagara University and Canisius College with a system awarding points to the victors after every meeting. Points accumulate throughout the course of the season and a cross-town champion is crowned at the conclusion of the athletic calendar.

The victory also extended NU's regular-season edge over Canisius to 6-0-1 since the 2009 season. The Purple Eagles also clinched a spot in the 2015 MAAC Tournament.
