RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Niagara men's soccer team struggled to generate much offense in its road match Saturday at Manhattan. The Purple Eagles failed to get a shot on goal on six shots throughout regulation time and two overtimes, eventually falling to Manhattan 1-0.
A penalty kick was awarded following a Niagara foul in the 102
nd minute to the Jaspers' Alex Shackley, who converted on the penalty kick opportunity. That shot was the only one to get the best of Niagara keeper
Colin Hanley. Manhattan's offense managed 18 shots in the game outside the penalty kick, but only three made it on net as Niagara's defense kept the premier scoring opportunities to a minimum.
Hanley has started the last five games for Niagara and has shown steady improvement. Although his record rests at 0-3-2, Hanley boasts a 1.76 goals-against average and .722 save percentage. The Purple Eagles have only scored three goals on offense in their last five games.
Despite the recent slide, Niagara closes with four of its last six games on the friendly confines of Niagara Field. In their last two games on the home turf, the Purple Eagles earned a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure and a 1-1 tie with Quinnipiac.
