Volleyball Hosts Niagara Invitational This Weekend

The Purple Eagles will host Providence, West Virginia and Gardner-Webb as part of the Niagara Invitational on Sept. 5-6. NU will play Providence at 11 a.m. and West Virginia at 6 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up the invitational against Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Pre-Match Tidbits
  • Outside hitter Nicole Matheis was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. She tied for team-high honors with 50 kills (2.94 kills per set) and led the team with 3.47 points per set while averaging 1.71 digs per set in four matches.
  • Niagara opened the season with a narrow five-set defeat to Colgate on Aug. 29.
  • The Purple Eagles went 1-2 at the Big Orange Tournament hosted by Syracuse over the weekend. NU defeated Delaware State, 3-2, for its first win of the season.
  • Niagara is 3-1 all-time against Providence with the most recent match coming on Sept. 12, 2009.
  • NU lost the only previous meeting with West Virginia on Sept. 14, 1996.
  • Niagara and Gardner-Webb have never faced each other before.
