Volleyball Heads To Pittsburgh For Panther Classic

The Niagara Purple Eagles will head back on the road to participate in the Panther Classic hosted by Pitt. Niagara will open the invitational versus Norfolk State on Friday at 4:30 followed by matches on Saturday against Duquesne at 10 a.m. and Pitt at 7 p.m.
Pre-Match Tidbits
  • The Purple Eagles went 2-1 during the Niagara Invitational last weekend with victories over Providence and Gardner-Webb to finish in second place despite being the lowest seeded team.
  • After starting the season 0-2, the Purple Eagles are 3-2 in their last five matches.
  • Freshman standouts, outside hitter Nicole Matheis and setter Alexis Gray thrived in the Niagara Invitational as they both earned All-Tournament team honors.
  • Matheis led the Purple Eagles with 3.75 kills per set, 4.29 points per set and with four aces in the three matches. She has led the team in kills for five straight matches while also collecting her first two career double-doubles.
  • Gray picked up her first double-double with a match-best 48 assists while collecting 16 digs in a four-set win over Providence in the first match of the invitational. She averaged 9.58 assists per set in three matches. 
  • Matheis has the top two kills performance among MAAC players – 22 (Colgate), 21 (Providence)
  • Gray's 54 assists at Colgate are the most by a MAAC player this season.
  • Allison Reis' 35 digs at Colgate are the most by a MAAC player this season.
  • Alex Stone's nine total blacks (4-5) versus Gardner-Webb are a MAAC-best.
  • Niagara had 16 aces at Delaware State which is a MAAC-high.
  • Niagara's .295 hitting percentage in the four-set win over Providence is a MAAC-leading percentage in four-set matches.
  • Gray is leading the MAAC in assists with 9.66 per set.
  • Niagara is third in the MAAC in hitting percentage, kills and assists.
  • The Purple Eagles will face Norfolk State (0-6) for the first-time ever.
  • NU is 0-7 all-time against Duquesne (3-3)
  • Niagara lost its only previous meeting with Pitt (5-1) on Sept. 10, 1999.
