Purple Eagles Sweep Gaels At MAAC Championships

Box Score LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Niagara volleyball team defeated the Iona Gaels in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19, at the 2014 MAAC Championships on Friday. The Purple Eagles advance to play Canisius in the fifth place match on Saturday at 11 a.m.

"The team did well to come after yesterday's tough loss," head coach Vilis Ozols said. "They played efficiently and we got to work with a couple of different line ups. We served effectively and then played some very solid defense."

Niagara (14-17) made quick work defeating Iona (10-24) for the third time this season. NU broke open the first set on a 9-2 run on its way to a 25-19 win. The Purple Eagles jumped out an 8-3 lead in the second set before seeing the Gaels charge back into the set to tie it at 19-19. The set would go back-and-forth until a kill by Logan Rae ended the set for Niagara, 25-23. NU also never trailed in the third set and used a 10-5 run to end the match.

Alexis Gray led the match with 28 assists and added 10 digs for her team-best 15th double-double of the season. Rylee Hunt led the match with 27 digs. Amanda Sedore, Alex Stone and Nicole Matheis all had eight kills.
