Ferguson Scores Second Goal Of The Season In 2-1 Loss

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles scored a second-half tally while a man down to tie the game, but a goal by the Siena Saints three minutes later gave the visitors a 2-1 win on Wednesday evening at Niagara Field.

Andrew Ferguson's strike in 63rd minute tied the game at 1-1 for the Purple Eagles (3-7-1; 0-2-1 MAAC). The junior controlled a pass from Sergio Lujan, walked the ball into the six-yard box, and chipped a shot far side for his second goal of the season. Lujan's assist is the freshman's first point of his collegiate career.

"Overall, the team worked hard, but we made too many individual mental mistakes to get a result," head coach Eric Barnes said after the match. "The team showed great resiliency to get a goal back a man down, which is a positive we can take from the match."

The Purple Eagles were forced to play a man down after a skirmish in front of the benches that came after a foul call.

Siena (7-5-0; 2-1-0 MAAC) regained the lead three minutes after Ferguson's tally when a header was floated in off of a cross and found its way past Steve Casey. NU kept possession for the majority of the final five minutes and Michael Hanton forced the Saints' keeper to make a save as time wound down, but Siena was able to hold out for the 2-1 win.

Four players from NU registered a shot on goal and Casey added a pair of saves to his season total.

Niagara had a few quality chances in the first half, namely a Nicholas Watson penalty kick in the 13th minute. The sophomore from Greenville, South Carolina sent a rocket shot towards the bottom right corner of the net, but the Siena keeper made a surprising diving save to keep the game scoreless. Siena found the scoreboard first after a Niagara giveaway in the defensive third led to a shot from just outside the 18-yard box found the back of the net.

"At this level, you can't miss penalty kicks or take stupid red cards and expect to win a match," said Barnes. "However, we are still in the hunt for the postseason and will be ready to go for St. Peter's."

The Purple Eagles will hit the road this weekend when they take on the Peacocks at this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
