FAIRFIELD, CONN – With an injury to
Steve Casey forcing defenseman
Kevin Garcia into goal, the Niagara Purple Eagles fell 2-0 to the Fairfield Stags on Saturday.
"Kevin was solid in goal today and our back line played well overall," head coach
Eric Barnes said. "Unfortunately we didn't combine well in the final third and were done in by a fluky goal at the beginning of the second half and a questionable penalty kick call."
The Niagara (5-9-2; 2-4-1 MAAC) defense kept Fairfield (7-3-5; 4-1-3 MAAC) at bay throughout the opening half, keeping the Stags to four shots that all missed the target. The game went into the break a 0-0 tie, but the Stags got on the board in the 46
th minute with a strike off of a cross from the left side of the box. They extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal off of the penalty kick that was awarded in the 81
st minute.
The Purple Eagles had chances to tie the game with three shots between Stag goals, including looks by
Jack Welsh and
Matthew Ferguson that forced the Fairfield keeper to make saves.
Niagara plays its final road game of the regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Poughkeepsie, New York to face the Marist Red Foxes at 1:00 p.m.
