CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Niagara men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by the Cleveland State Vikings on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The men's team fell 160-73 while the women's team dropped a 149.5-86.5 decision.
For the men, sophomore
Shawn Warner led the way as he collected a first-place finish in the 1000 freestyle (9:47.48) while taking a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (52.03). The Purple Eagles also got a first place finish from
Edgar Melchor in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.57.
Senior
Shane Baxter took second in the 100 backstroke (51.78) and 200 individual medley (1:55.92)
The men's team also took second place in the 200 freestyle relay as
Shane Baxter,
Jason Ellis ,
Andrew Wilson and
James Crumm combined for a finishing time of 1:29.12. Wilson also took second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.73.
The women's squad secured a first-place finish from sophomore
Meredith Ricks in the 100 backstroke (1:01.07) while receiving second-place finishes from
Sydney Kligys and
Bridgette Ehrmann. Kligys had a time of 25.63 in the 50 freestyle while Ehrmnn earned a 1:12.71 finish in the breaststroke.
The Purple Eagles also placed second in the 200 medley relay as Ricks, Ehrmann,
Julia Casolo and
Annie Eckhardt finished with a time of 1:53.00. Junior
Emily Altier finished second in the 1000 freestyle (10:57.09) as well.
Niagara will be back in action tomorrow (Oct. 25) to take on the Fredonia Blue Devils at Steele Hall Natatorium with events beginning at 12 p.m.
