Women’s Soccer Battles To A 2-2 Draw

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Niagara University women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Iona on Saturday.

Freshman forward Laura Ortiz put the Purple Eagles on the board early with her second goal of the season. Naomi Giovino took a corner kick which led to a shot off the post by freshman Eva Bachmann and Ortiz was there for the rebound five minutes into the game.

Iona would get the equalizer in the 26th minute of the contest as Erika Flowers received a pass from Julia Campagna and took a shot to the right side of the net. The teams went to the half tied at 1-1 as Iona led in total shots 4-3 in the period.

The Gaels' Charlotte Stuart put the hosts up 2-1 after scoring an unassisted goal from 20 yards out that bounced off the left post into the net in the 67th minute of the game. Shortly thereafter, Danielle Kennedy evened the score for the Purple Eagles with five minutes remaining in regulation. Kennedy took a pass from Kiley Titus and one-timed it from the top of the box to the right side of the net.

In the overtime periods, both teams traded a few scoring opportunities; however, the game would end in a 2-2 tie.

The Gaels launched 13 total shots in the game putting seven of them on goal, while Niagara had five of its 12 shots on frame. The Purple Eagles also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Junior goalkeeper Claire Feiertag stood tall in net making five saves for Niagara while her counterpart, Lauren Ferris made three stops between the pipes for Iona.

With today's result, the Purple Eagles improved to 8-2-5 overall and 4-1-3 MAAC, while the Gaels now stand at 6-8-3 overall and 2-3-3 in the MAAC.

"We were very fortunate today that our opponent wasn't able to take advantage of our poor play.  We just looked out of sorts all game," said head coach Peter Veltri. "The good thing is that the character of this team is positive, so I have no doubt that we will have an excellent week of practice and be ready to go next weekend."

Niagara will look to jump back in the win column when it hosts Fairfield on Saturday, Oct. 25 for a 2 p.m. kick-off.
