Volleyball Edged In Five Sets At Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Despite season highs in kills and attacking percentage, the Niagara Purple Eagles fell to the Saint Peter's Peacocks in five sets (21-25, 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 15-11) on Sunday.

The Purple Eagles (0-12, 0-2) sprinted to a 2-0 lead before the Peacocks (3-10, 1-1 MAAC) stunned Niagara by winning the next three sets for their first win of the series since 2009.

Niagara used a season-best .355 hitting percentage to take the first set, 25-21. NU battled through a close second set. The Purple Eagles trailed 19-17 before a kill by Alex Stone sparked an 8-0 run as they took a 2-0 lead.

The third set went back-and-forth set as the Purple Eagles looked to close out the match for their first win of the season. NU served for the match at 24-23 and 26-25, but was denied each time. Two errors by the Purple Eagles with the score tied at 26-26 won the set for SPU.

Niagara jumped out to a 9-3 lead to start the fourth set. However, the Peacocks rallied to take a 19-18 lead. NU tied the match at 23-23, but consecutive kills by Dayana Arrufat was enough to send the match into the fifth set.

In the final set, a kill by Melissa McGwin brought Niagara to 11-10 after trailing 5-1.  Though, the Peacocks finished the better of the two teams as they won the fifth set, 15-11.

Three Purple Eagles had double-digit kills with 11, including Logan Rae who had a career-high in kills and added 11 digs for her first career double-double. Freshman Emily Hopkins set a new career-high in assists with 35.

Niagara plays its final non-conference match of the season on Monday against Delaware State at 5 p.m.
