NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's soccer team battled non-conference opponent Duquesne into extra time, but eventually fell to the Dukes Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.
The Purple Eagles (0-7-0) and Dukes (2-4-1) played to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes of play. With 56 seconds remaining in the first 10 minutes of extra time, Haley Yow sent a cross into the heavily trafficked box. Stephanie Colon jumped on the loose ball and fed Olivia Roberson for the one timer past NU goalkeeper
Claire Feiertag for the game winning tally.
The teams traded opportunities in the opening 45 minutes of play, with Duquesne holding an eight to four advantage in shots, but a majority of the attempts on net were not on target.
Breanna Catipovic had the Purple Eagles' best chance of the half in the 31st minute. The forward was able to fight her way past a Duke defender, and tried for a chip over Duquesne keeper Devon Tabata, but the attempt went wide.
Duquesne increased the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Purple Eagles 11-0, but the Niagara defense held strong against the Duke's offense to force the game into the overtime.
Feiertag finished the game with six saves.
Niagara will take a short trip to UB Stadium to battle the Buffalo Bulls in the team's final non-conference matchup of the season. The Purps will kick start the MAAC portion of the schedule when they host Monmouth on Sept. 21.
