JERSEY CITY, N.J. –Niagara women's soccer rookie
Maureen Papaconstantinou goal in the 102nd minute of play carried the Purple Eagles to a 2-1 win over Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon at Jaroshak Field.
Despite being down a man, Papaconstantinou brought the double overtime to an end with a corner kick goal that beat Saint Peter's goalkeeper Molly O'Halloran to extend Niagara's winning streak to three games. The goal was the freshman's first as a Purple Eagle.
With the victory, the Purple Eagles improve to 4-9-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play, while the Peacocks drop to 4-9-0 on the year and 0-5-0 in the MAAC.
"I'm happy we won, but we made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "We demonstrated great heart and determination to play the second half and overtime down a player. We need to be smarter in our decisions, and realize that our individual actions effect the whole team."
Scoring kicked up in the later parts of the opening frame with Saint Peter's getting on the board first as Emily Fenice tallied an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute. The forward stole the ball from an NU defender before netting a high shot past goalkeeper
Claire Feiertag.
It didn't take long for Niagara to even the game at one apiece as the Purple and White scored two minutes before the end of the half off the foot of
Shawnique Samuels. The rookie grabbed her first goals as a Purple Eagle in the 43rd minute to tie the game heading into intermission.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period, as SPU headed into overtime with a slim 9-8 advantage in shots. The goalkeepers did not see any looks on net in the first 10 minutes of extra time, but Niagara capitalized on one of its two shots in the second OT to bring the game to a close.
Feiertag finished the game with two saves to improve to 4-6-0 on the season.
Niagara returns to Monteagle Ridge on Wednesday, Oct. 9 to host the Siena Saints at 4 p.m. at Niagara Field.
