Fairfield Rallies Past Niagara, 3-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Despite taking the first set, the Niagara volleyball team fell to the Fairfield Stags in four sets, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-13, on Sunday.

Melissa McGwin led Niagara (2-18, 1-8 MAAC) with 13 kills for her second straight double-digit kills match. The Rochester, N.Y. native had a match-best hitting percentage of .364, on a minimum of 10 kills, which is the third highest this season. Amanda Sedore added 12 kills and tied a career-high with 16 digs for her second career double-double.

McGwin had four of her 13 kills in the first set while hitting .571 as she helped Niagara squeeze past the Stags (8-11, 6-3 MAAC). After trailing early, the Purple Eagles and Stags swapped leads five times and with the score tied at 23-23 Niagara scored the final two points to take the set.

In set two, Fairfield led 17-10 before Niagara cut the lead to 23-21; though Fairfield closed out the set with consecutive kills. The ever important rubber set went to the home team. The tightly contested third set came down to a 7-0 run by Fairfield to win the set 25-20. The Stags used a pair of extended runs to pull away from Niagara in the fourth set, winning it 25-13 to seal the match.

Niagara is back home next weekend to start a three-match homestand beginning against Canisius on Saturday at 1 p.m.
