BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The No.17 Niagara hockey team saw its 12-game unbeaten streak come to an end after the Bowling Green Falcons handed the Purple Eagles a 3-0 loss on Saturday evening at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Bryce Williamson, Camden Wojtala and Dajon Mingo each found the back of the net for BGSU (4-10-4; 2-7-3 CCHA), and Andrew Hammond pushed aside 38 Purple Eagle shots to hand NU its first shutout defeat of the season.
“Considering both teams are coming off break it was a great paced game,” said head coach
David Burkholder. “I thought the first two periods were two even teams. We were down one goal midway through the third which means the game was up for grabs which is where you want to be on the road. We had a ton of great chances in the first and second period with nothing to show for it.”
Niagara (10-3-4; 9-0-1 AHA) applied the pressure on its opponent in the early minutes of the game, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage in shots that included three quality opportunities on the powerplay.
The Falcons would capitalize with the extra man at the 13:01 mark off their first shot of the contest after
Dan Kolenda was sent to the box. With 1:36 remaining on the powerplay, Mike Sullivan saw his shot from the point redirected by Williamson under the pads of NU goaltender
Carsen Chubak for the right winger’s fourth goal on the year.
In the final three minutes of the contest, Wojtala added another powerplay marker and Mingo made it 3-0 less then two minutes later to solidify the Bowling Green victory.
Chubak wrapped up the game with 40 saves.
The Purple Eagles will look to remain unbeaten in conference play against the Air Force Falcons on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Dwyer Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m.
