NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles won their sixth straight match with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16) win against the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Saturday.
The Purple Eagles (15-10, 12-3 MAAC) needed four sets to put away the Peacocks (1-29, 0-16 MAAC) for their seventh consecutive win in the series. NU remains in a three-way tie for first place with Fairfield and Canisius, while its season-best six-match win streak is the longest active streak in the MAAC.
“Because the top four teams are so tight (in the standings), every win is important and we definitely needed this win,” head coach
Dottie Porch said. “We really wanted to come out here and work hard to get.”
NU cruised to victories in the first and second set, before slipping in the third set. Niagara recovered with a strong fourth set to pick up the win.
Kari Honomichl, who leads the MAAC in kills per set, led the match with 17 kills and had 12 digs for her team-leading 14th double-double of the season. Fellow senior
Michelle James led the match with 36 assists and led NU in digs with 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Freshman
Chelsea Watson was second on the team with a career-best nine kills, and
Ellen Senf had eight kills.
Niagara will hold its senior day ceremony prior to the start of its match against Manhattan on Sunday at 2 p.m.
