NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's soccer team (2-6-0) fell to the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (5-3-1) by a 2-0 margin in the final game of the 2011 Big Four Tournament at Niagara Field on Sunday afternoon.
"I am definitely disappointed in the result," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "I thought we played well, however, we can't consistently put ourselves into an early hole and expect to overcome it every time."
St. Bonaventure nearly took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, as a Bonnie forward was sprung on a breakaway, but senior defender
Jen Kimoto broke up the play. The Bonnies would get on the board in the 12th minute, when a miscue by senior goalkeeper
Gabrielle Wilson was capitalized on by Molly Curry.
Wilson was sharp for the rest of the first half, making several diving saves to keep the game tied at one, including a shot in the 20th minute, that she got her fingertips on.
Niagara had several chances in the second half to get back into the game, but just couldn't convert. The Bonnies would put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute, when Tori Burchett converted on a perfect pass from Molly Curry.
Wilson made five saves in the loss.
Buffalo won the 2011 Big Four Tournament championship by defeating Canisius in double overtime to start the day.
Jen Kimoto and
