NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's soccer team (2-5-0) fell into a hole from which it couldn't climb out of, falling to the visiting Buffalo Bulls (6-1-0) on Friday night at Niagara Field by a 2-0 score.
"We started off slow," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "If you look at the shots, we outshot them. If you look at the corner kicks, we had more of them. We need to come out quicker and be more opportunistic."
Buffalo came roaring out the gates, scoring twice on senior goalkeeper
Gabrielle Wilson in the first eight minutes of the game. Niagara had several chances to get back into the game in the first half, including a shot off the post by
Julianne Viviano and a corner kick from
Jamie Raepple that Bulls goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon bobbled and nearly snuck past her.
Niagara upped the pressure in the second half, but couldn't beat Wheldon with its five second half shots.
"I think we created plenty of opportunities, but we just couldn't get the final touch on the bouncing ball tonight," Veltri said. "Our lost opportunities hurt us tonight."
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 18, when they host St. Bonaventure in the final game of the Big Four Classic at 1:30 p.m. The game will be televised via tape-delay by Lockport Community Television (LCTV).
