Women's Basketball Falls In Home Finale

Liz Flooks

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s basketball team fell in its final home game of the season versus the Iona Gaels, 69-38, on Sunday.

Niagara (1-26, 0-16 MAAC) completed its home schedule without a victory for the first time in program history. NU was down 20-14 late in the first half when the Gaels (11-17, 7-9 MAAC) made three straight 3-pointers to take a 29-16 halftime lead.

Iona continued the run in the second half with an 18-0 run to sprint away for its 13th straight win the series. 15 Gaels saw action in the game compared to eight Purple Eagles, who are missing several players due to injury and recovering from the program’s first-ever triple-overtime game on Friday night.

Liz Flooks, Jacy Schulz and Julie Gebhard were the three seniors recognized on senior day. Flooks finished her career at the Gallagher Center with seven points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

“Liz is an unbelievable player and even more unbelievable person," head coach Kendra Faustin said.  "She is the most positive player I have ever coached. She has been through a lot of ups and downs with coaching changes and our record, and she has handled it with maturity and grace.”

A pair of freshmen played well in the game. Chanel Johnson, who set a career-high with 20 points in the first meeting with Iona, led NU with 13 points and Katie Gattuso grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds.

Niagara also went perfect from the free-throw line, going 9-for-9, and outrebounded Iona 37-36.

Niagara will cross the Grand Island Bridges for a rivalry matchup with Canisius on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
