Loyola Blanks Women's Soccer

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD. - The No. 2 Niagara Purple Eagles (7-10-2, 5-2-2 MAAC) were eliminated from the 2011 Chick-fil-A MAAC Women's Soccer Championships, dropping a 5-0 decision to the No. 3 Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds (8-11-1, 5-3-1 MAAC) on Friday night.

The Greyhounds struck early and often on Niagara senior goalkeeper Gabrielle Wilson. Kelsey Rene scored twice for Loyola in the first 26 minutes of the game, putting the Purple Eagles behind the eight ball.

The Greyhounds would put the game out of reach in the second half, when Nichole Schiro would score twice in a six minute span, for a 4-0 lead with 30 minutes left to play. Loyola would add one more goal in the 84th minute for the final score of 5-0.

"It was a frustrating night from the opening whistle," head coach Peter Veltri said. "It seemed like everything that could go wrong, went wrong. You have to give a lot of credit to Loyola, they played hard and deserved to win."

Wilson made three saves in the loss. The No. 3 Greyhounds move on to the MAAC Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m., against the top-seeded Marist Red Foxes that defeated the No. 4 Fairfield Stags via penalty kicks.

The Purple Eagles finished the season with a 7-10-2 mark, while going 5-2-2 in MAAC play.
