NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Two second half goals pushed the Niagara women's soccer team (5-7-0, 3-0-0 MAAC) to its third consecutive victory, downing the visiting Rider Broncs (7-4-2, 0-2-0 MAAC) by a 2-0 score at Niagara Field on Friday night.
Niagara opened scoring 55 minutes into the game, when sophomore
Kayla Picanco took a shot thru traffic on net, which went off of a Rider defender and into the net. The Purple Eagles would seal the game in the 83rd minute, when freshman
Catherine Meyer finished a long run with a perfect feed to
Breanna Catipovic for the 2-0 lead.
"Tonight was a big win for us," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "We kept the momentum going with the win. We had a tough non-conference schedule, but we are putting it together when it matters the most."
The Purple Eagles and Broncs traded chances in the first half, but the game was scoreless after 45 minutes. Niagara took five shots in the first half, including a strong finish by Catipovic
later in the opening stanza, but Rider goalkeeper Danielle Singson stopped the Purple Eagle opportunity.
Senior goalkeeper
Gabrielle Wilson made nine saves en route to a clean sheet.
"It took some time for us to get going, to get comfortable with one another. Everyone is working hard right now. We will be ready for Sunday's contest."
Niagara is back in action on Sunday, when it hosts the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds at noon.
