Volleyball Beats Manhattan In Battle Of MAAC Unbeatens

Box Score

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara volleyball team strolled to its 23rd straight win over MAAC opponents with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23) win over the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday.

"To get the win today was great," head coach Susan Clements said. "To be able to gain some ground when you can is important early on. We had some mental mistakes and let up at the end, but we are moving in the direction we want."

Niagara (10-7, 4-0 MAAC) extended its home winning streak to 12 and its conference home winning streak to 18 in the contest between the only unbeaten teams in conference. The Purple Eagles had a .246 attacking percentage against Manhattan (8-6, 3-1 MAAC) which entered the match with a conference-best .181 opponent attacking percentage.

Hannah Hedrick (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a match-high 13 kills at a .303 clip and had eight digs and two aces. Amanda Wilken (Cincinnati, Ohio) joined Hedrick as the only other player with double-digit digs. Wilken had 11 kills on a match-high .733 attacking percentage. Reigning two-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Sam Morgan (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with a match-high 19 digs and Nicole Bayer (Concord, Ohio) had a match-high 37 assists.

NU cruised to a 2-0 set lead behind 19 kills while forcing 10 Jaspers errors. In the third set, the Purple Eagles were trailing 22-20 when they ran off three straight points to take the lead. Niagara clinched the match on consecutive Manhattan errors.

Niagara hosts Saint Peter’s on Sunday at 2 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast via tape-delay on Lockport Community Television (LCTV).
