Women's Soccer Drops Close One, 1-0

Chelsea Spencer

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - A St. Bonaventure goal in the 83rd minute sunk the Niagara women's soccer team (5-2-1), as they fell to the host Bonnies (6-3-0) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Puma/Big Four Invitational.

Chelsea Spencer was hit with a yellow card at the 82:33 mark and the Bonnies seized the momentum. Just 17 seconds later, Alyssa Lapp deflected an Anna Cunningham shot past senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers for the 1-0 lead. Caitlin Long nearly tied the game with about a minute left in regulation, but it was cleared away from the net by the Bonnies defense.

"We can't expect to win games if we only show up for a half," Niagara women's soccer coach Peter Veltri said. "We can be successful if we play for 90 minutes."

Niagara was outshot 11-4 in the first half, but Bowers stepped up in a big way for the Purple Eagles. Bowers made four saves to keep the game scoreless after 45 minutes.

"Hopefully we will learn from this and be better off when our conference season starts," Veltri said.

Freshman Danielle Kennedy and junior Jen Kimoto were named to the All-Tournament team.

After a week off, the Purple Eagles begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Oct. 1, when they travel to New Jersey to take on the Rider Broncs at 7 p.m.
