Women's Soccer Downs Buffalo, 1-0

Ashleigh Bowers

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Sophomore Jamie Raepple's goal in the 69th minute of play extended four Niagara streaks, as the women's soccer team (5-1-1) downed the Buffalo Bulls (1-6-0) 1-0 on Friday afternoon at the Puma/Big Four Tournament.

Raepple was able to redirect a free kick from senior Chelsea Spencer past Bulls goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon for the game's only tally. Raepple now has scored in four straight games and has notched the game-winning goal in the last three games.

The Purple Eagles have now won three straight games and haven't allowed a second half goal in seven games this season.

"I thought the team fought hard today and outplayed Buffalo," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "It's always nice to beat a local rival like Buffalo, but it's a little sweeter after outplaying them last year, but coming up on the short end of the stick."

Niagara controlled the first half, outshooting the Bulls by a 7-0 margin in the first 20 minutes of play, but couldn't find the back of the net. Buffalo had an offensive surge in the second half of the opening frame, but Niagara senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers was up to the task, stopping all four shots on goal.

Bowers finished the day with a season-high eight saves and her fourth shutout of the season, tying her career mark from a season ago. Bowers now has a goals against average of 0.54, which is ranked in the top 50 in the nation.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday afternoon, when they take on the host Bonnies at 2:30 p.m.
