Women's Soccer Wins Fall Classic In Double OT

Jamie Raepple

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Sophomore Jamie Raepple scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime, securing the 2010 Niagara University Fall Classic title for the Niagara women's soccer team (4-1-1) in a 2-1 triumph over the visiting Duquesne Dukes (3-3-1) on Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.

Senior defender Caitlin Long sent a long pass from midfield and Raepple split the Dukes defense and then tucked the ball away to the left of Duquesne goalkeeper Gabby Morrin for her third goal in as many games.

"I'm very happy with the win, but I'm disappointed with our play," Niagara women's soccer head coach Peter Veltri said. "I thought we were sluggish today, but the girls showed great character in fighting through and getting the win."

Just 16 minutes into the game, Duquesne scored the first goal against the Purple Eagles at Niagara Field this season, when Kristin Vinicky launched a 22-yard direct free kick to the top corner, beating Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers. Duquesne held a slim 1-0 lead at the half, while outshooting the Purple Eagles 6-2.

Niagara tied the game just two minutes into the second half, when a corner kick from Chelsea Spencer found freshman Breanna Catipovic in the box, who passed it over to fellow rookie Kayla Picanco for the goal. Niagara continued to apply the pressure, outshooting the Dukes 6-4 in the second half.

The Purple Eagles are now the two-time defending Niagara Fall Classic champions, also claiming the title in 2008, with wins over Albany and North Dakota. Raepple, Bowers, Spencer and Jen Kimoto were named to the 2010 Niagara Fall Classic All-Tournament Team, while Raepple also took home MVP honors.

Niagara is back in action on Friday, Sept. 17, when they take on Buffalo at 2:30 pm as part of the Big Four Tournament.
