NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara volleyball team won its fourth-straight match with a convincing 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-16) win against the Saint Peter's Peahens on Sunday.
"We are really responding when the other team elevates their game," head coach Susan Clements said. "Today was a big goal for us to win as the past two years we have dropped this match to Saint Peter's."
Niagara (10-8, 5-1 MAAC) continued its great recent form with another solid performance in the straight set win over Saint Peter's (5-12, 1-5 MAAC), its first win in Jersey City since Nov. 2007. The Purple Eagles have now won four-straight matches, all without dropping a set, and have been efficient on offense and stifling on defense.
Niagara has held its last four opponents to less than .110 hitting percentage. The Purple Eagles held the Peahens to a .090 hitting percentage through the first two sets of today's match.
Junior Michelle James' 45 assists, a season-high in conference games, led to four Purple Eagles with double-digit kills. Freshman Ellen Senf led the match with 12 kills, Sophomores Kari Honomichl and Amanda Wilken each had 11 and junior Hannah Hedrick had 10 kills.
Wilken's 11 kills was season-high in three sets matches. Hedrick added 11 digs in the match for her team-best sixth double-double of the season. Junior Sam Morgan extended her double-digit digs streak to 80 matches with a match-high 26 digs.
"We had a big day from everyone and again our middles gave the extra push we needed to open us our outsides (hitters)," Clements said.
Niagara returns home to play the Iona Gaels on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.
