Women's Soccer Doubles Up Iona, 2-0

Jamie Raepple

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Sophomore Jamie Raepple notched her second career two-goal game, helping the Niagara women's soccer team (9-4-1, 4-2-0 MAAC) extend their winning streak to four games with a 2-0 win over the host Iona Gaels (3-13-1, 1-4-1 MAAC) on Friday afternoon.

"This was a hard fought victory," head Niagara women's soccer coach Peter Veltri said. "At times we played really well and other times it looked bad. The best thing was that we competed for a full 90 minutes."

For the fourth consecutive game, the Purple Eagles struck first. Raepple notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season when she beat Gaels goalkeeper Trista Rivera on a breakaway in the 23rd minute. The eventual game-winning goal was Raepple's team-high fourth of the season. Niagara senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers faced a strong offensive attack from Iona, stopping all six Iona shots in the first half.

Raepple gave the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead in the 76th minute when she headed in her sixth goal of the season off of a cross from senior defender Erin Baker. Friday's game against Iona marked the second time in her young career that Raepple has notched two goals in a game, with the last time coming during a 3-1 defeat of Cornell on Sept. 6, 2009.

Bowers and junior Gabrielle Wilson combined for the team's seventh shutout of the season against Iona, while tying a season-high with eight saves. After the Iona game, Bowers saw her overall goals-against average drop to 0.63.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday, when they take on Fairfield at 1 p.m.
