Sam Morgan

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Niagara volleyball team tied a program-best eight match winning streak in its 3-0 (26-24, 25-8, 25-15) victory over the Rider Broncs on Sunday.

Niagara (14-8, 9-1 MAAC) has swept seven of its eight opponents during this unbeaten run, including Rider (1-19, 0-10 MAAC) on Sunday. The Purple Eagles were pushed early by the home team. Both teams exchanged points well into the opening set and were tied at 24-24 when an attacking error by the Broncs opened the door for Niagara. Junior Hannah Hedrick had one of her match-high 10 kills to seal the first set for Niagara, 26-24.

The Purple Eagles made quick work of the Broncs in the second set. NU closed the set on a 13-2 run and had a match-high .393 attacking percentage in the set. NU had little trouble controlling the third set. Holding a 10-6 lead, Niagara went on a 11-3 run to seize control of the match en route to winning the third set, 25-15.

Hedrick, who led the match with 10 kills, was one dig away from her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman Ellen Senf had the second most kills in the match with nine and was followed by Kathy Bibler and Amanda Wilken who had seven and six kills, respectively.

Junior Michelle James led the match with 29 assists and had 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Junior Sam Morgan had a match-high 13 digs to extend her double-digit digs streak to 84 matches.

Niagara looks to set a program record of nine-straight victories when its welcome archrival Canisius to the Gallagher Center on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. NU and Canisius will both don pink jerseys in an effort to raise awareness to breast health.
