Rider Downs Women's Soccer, 2-1

Breanna Catipovic

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Niagara women's soccer team (5-3-1, 0-1-0 MAAC) couldn't hold onto a one-goal lead, falling to the Rider Broncs  for the first time in the last six meetings, 2-1 on Friday night. All three of Niagara's defeats have been one-goal games.

Breanna Catipovic scored her first collegiate goal in the 34th minute of the game, after senior Chelsea Spencer fed her the ball at the top of the box. The Broncs would tie the game with under five minutes in the first half, when Jody Sokol beat Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers.

The decisive goal came in the 58th minute, when Abi Cottam beat Bowers from 15 yards out. The Purple Eagles outshot the Broncs by a 14-11 margin, but were unable to tie the game.

"Tonight we made two defensive mistakes and we paid for it," head women's soccer coach Peter Veltri said. "We created plenty of scoring chances but we didn't capitalize on them. We need to improve on finishing our chances."

Niagara is back in action on Sunday afternoon, when they travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola.
