Albany Defeats Women's Soccer, 1-0

Ashleigh Bowers

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Niagara women's soccer team (3-4-1) was unable to find the back of the net, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Albany Great Danes (4-5-0) on Friday afternoon.

"It was a tough game today," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We didn't have our A-game today, we just weren't sharp. We need to do a better job attacking and defending as a team."

Junior netminder Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) was busy right as the game started, facing four shots in the opening 10 minutes. The fifth shot would beat Bowers, as Ashley Tirabassi found the back of the net on a partial breakaway, after Nicole Berard sent a perfect pass past the Niagara defense. Niagara only mustered four shots in the first half of play, but were only down 1-0 heading into the second half.

The Purple Eagles attempted a comeback in the second half but fell short. Niagara took six shots in the second half, but none of them were good enough to beat Albany netminder Breanna Maggio.

Bowers made a season-high nine saves in the loss.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday, taking on Temple at noon. Sunday's game will be broadcasted via tape delay on Lockport Community Television Sunday night.
