Baseball Earns Second-Straight Split

Mark Sikorski

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Niagara baseball team (2-5) earned its second consecutive doubleheader split on Sunday, losing the first game against Maryland-Eastern Shore 6-3 before winning the second game 3-1.

The second game was a pitcher's duel, featuring senior Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.). The right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced, allowing two hits and one unearned run while striking out six. Sikorski (1-0) gave way to senior closer Dennis Chachko (Oceanport, N.J.) in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded. Chachko struck out the only batter he faced to record his first save of the season.

The Purple Eagles scored twice in the top of the sixth and added in insurance run in the seventh for the 3-1 win. Matt Wietlispach (Chicago, Ill.) scored the first run after leading off with a double, and Jason Cramer (Jackson, N.J.) lined a single to left to bring in the second run of the inning. Brian Deering scored an unearned run on a passed ball before the game was called due to darkness while NU had the bases loaded without an out.

In the first game of the day, Joe Candelmo (Orefield, Pa.) fell to 0-2 after allowing four runs on five hit in four innings. Freshman Steve Smith (West islip, N.Y.) had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

The Purple Eagles continue their Spring Break road trip when they face Coppin State on Tuesday.
