On the Court

Fairfield Stags (15-8, 10-2 MAAC)

Fairfield enters today’s game as one of the hottest teams in the MAAC. The Stags have won seven-straight, including defeating the Purple Eagles on Jan. 18 and handing Marist its first conference loss in the season while snapping its 37-game home MAAC win streak. Senior Baendu Lowenthal averages 16.1

ppg and has scored at last 20 points in four of her last five games.

Last Meeting - January 18, 2009, Niagara 63 - Fairfield 76

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara fought hard against a battled tested Fairfield Stags club, but eventually lost 76-63 on Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. A scoring drought late in the second-half tilted the game in favor of the visitors.

Against the Stags (Stags lead 26-16)

The Purple Eagles have dropped the last five meetings with the Stags in the series that started in the Purple Eagles’ first season in the MAAC in 1990. Niagara ran off five-straight wins from Feb. 2002-Jan. 2004, but has only won twice since then: Jan. 14 2005 (77-72) and Jan. 22, 2006 (63-59).

The Freshmen Three

A bright spot for the young Purple Eagles have been the recent play of three freshmen: Grace Cunningham, Ali Morris and Meghan Waterman. Cunningham has played in all but one game since the calendar turned to 2009 in which she tied her career-high of eight points versus Fairfield. She is the first guard off the bench. Morris has been featured in every game this season, starting 19 times. The freshman guard had taken control of the team by running the very important and demanding point guard position. Morris is fourth on the team in points (6.0) and second with 44 assists; she was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 5. Waterman’s playing time has increased in 2009; she has also played in every game this season. She played a career-high 31 minutes versus Saint Peter’s and led the team with three steals and two assists.
