Men's Hockey Doubles Up Robert Morris, 6-3

Egor Mironov

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Junior Egor Mironov (Thornhill, Ont.) had a career-high four points on the way to leading the Niagara men's hockey team (14-10-2; 7-2-1 CHA) to a 6-3 victory over visiting Robert Morris (5-17-4; 1-7-2 CHA) on Saturday night at Dwyer Arena. The Purps are now unbeaten in six of their last seven games.

Mironov, who finished with two goals, two assists and four points on the night has been on a tear as of late, scoring eight points in his last three games and notching points in eight of his last nine games.

"Egor is on one of those streaks that you hope doesn't end," head coach Dave Burkholder said. "Our upperclassmen are contributing and we will ride that hot-streak."

For the second consecutive night, both teams spent the majority of the first period looking for a flow to the game. Down 1-0 halfway through the opening set, Mironov tied the game on a strong individual effort, beating Colonial goalie Wes Russell on the backhand.

Less then a minute later, senior Ted Cook (Hogansburg, N.Y.) gave Niagara its first lead of the night, when he buried a rebound from Mironov, that clanked off the iron. Cook's goal puts him in a tie for fifth place in career points at Niagara with 132, tying recent graduate Sean Bentivoglio.

The Purps poured it on in the second period, upping the lead to 4-1. Junior Chris Moran (Buffalo, N.Y.) added his 11th goal of the season, going high stick side on the man-advantage for the 3-1 lead. Eight minutes later senior Vince Rocco (Woodbridge, Ont.) made it 4-1 by picking the pocket of a Colonial defenseman behind the net, curling in front of the net and dekeing past Russell's blocker side. The Colonials would score late in the period to come within two heading into the third period.

The Purps would make it 5-2 halfway through the third period, when the trio of freshman Brian Dowd (Buffalo, N.Y.), junior Ryan Annesley (Ajax, Ont.) and freshman Sam Goodwin (St.Louis, Mo.) connected on series of tic-tac-toe passes, with Goodwin eventually one-timing the puck past Russell from his left. After Robert Morris came within two at 5-3, Mironov finished off his night by adding an empty-netter, for the final 6-3 tally.

Rocco finished with a goal and two assists, while senior defenseman Dan Sullivan (Scarborough, Ont.) tied a career-high with two points on the evening.

Niagara next travels to Alabama-Huntsville for a two game series, starting on Friday at 8 p.m. eastern time.
