Men's Hockey Marches Past Colonials 4-2

Vince Rocco

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Three unanswered goals helped the Niagara men's hockey team (13-10-2; 6-2-1 CHA) defeat visiting Robert Morris (5-16-4; 1-6-2 CHA) 4-2 at Dwyer Arena on Friday night. The Purps are now unbeaten in five of their last six games.

Tied at two about halfway through the third period, junior Egor Mironov (Thornhill, Ont) notched his 10th point in his last eight games to give the Purps a 3-2 lead. Junior Chris Moran (Buffalo, N.Y.) would complete his second consecutive three-point game by beating Colonial netminder Brooks Ostergard five-hole.

"We needed to play well and outwork them in the third period," head coach Dave Burkholder said. "I think we outplayed them in the third, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game."

Both teams were quiet for the first 10 minutes of the game, before Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead off of a faceoff to the left of senior netminder Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.). Niagara would respond 56 seconds later on the man-advantage, as senior Vince Rocco (Woodbridge, Ont.) stuffed home a juicy rebound from Moran.  The Purps had momentum going their way, which included outshooting the Colonials 11-6 in the opening frame.

About eight minutes into the middle period, Chris Margott gave the Colonials their second lead of the night, with a wrap-around goal past the outstretched arms of Pagliero. The resilient Purps tied it again, with sophomore Bryan Haczyk (Nutley, N.J.) crashing the net and finding some open real estate over Ostergard.

Freshman Danny Baco (Buffalo, N.Y.) added three helpers for his first career multi-point game, while fellow Western New Yorker Moran added a goal and two assists to up his point total to a team-leading 23 points. Pagliero made 43 saves in the victory.

The same two teams will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m.
