LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - Senior Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) netted her second goal of the MAAC Tournament in the ninth minute of overtime, capping a furious comeback that helped No. 6 Niagara (10-9-1) to a 2-1 decision over No. 7 Marist (8-10-2) in the MAAC semifinals on Sunday afternoon at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
Niagara trailed for most of the game until the 87th minute, when Greco sent a timely pass over to fellow senior Michelle Emery (Colorado Springs, Colo.) for the game-tying goal, sending the game into an extra session. Niagara notched the game-winning goal in the 99th minute, when senior Brittany Benthin (Medina, N.Y.) used a great individual effort to bypass two Marist defenders and pass the ball to Greco who kicked Niagara into the MAAC finals.
"I'm proud of the way the girls came back today," head coach Peter Veltri said. "The comeback showed the true character of our team, which is full of heart."
The Red Foxes opened scoring in the ninth minute of the game, when Jaclynn Sabia beat junior netminder Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead. Marist outshot Niagara in the first half 4-2, while taking its slim lead into halftime.
"We started out sluggish and not too sharp in our execution," Veltri said. "We came out in the second half, never gave up and just kept fighting."
The No. 6 Purple Eagles will take on No. 1 Loyola in the MAAC Championship game on Nov. 2 at noon.
