NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's soccer team (8-8-1, 4-4-0 MAAC) were unable to earn an important MAAC victory against the Fairfield Stags (9-8-2, 4-2-2 MAAC), dropping a 2-0 decision at a very rainy and windy Niagara Field on Friday night .
The first half saw the Purple Eagles attacking into the high winds, which made things difficult. Niagara was only able to get one shot on net during the opening 45 minutes, while Fairfield struck twice within a 4:52 span to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
"We made it difficult by not showing up in the first half," head coach Peter Veltri said.
Niagara came out in the second half and attempted eight shots, while nearly missing on several quality chances that could of put them right back into the game. Senior Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) took four shots for the Purple Eagles.
"We played better in the second half, but if we want to move forward as a team, we need to play to our potential for a full 90 minutes," Veltri said.
Junior netminder Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) made three saves in the loss.
Niagara concludes the regular season when it hosts Iona on Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. The game will be aired via tape-delay on Lockport Community Television on Sunday at 7 p.m. and throughout next week.
