Heads Up Play Leads Women's Soccer To OT Victory

Courtney Davies

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior Courtney Davies (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored her second consecutive game-winning goal to help the Niagara women's soccer team (6-5-1, 2-1-0 MAAC) to a 1-0  overtime win over the host Manhattan Jaspers (4-7-0, 0-3-0 MAAC) on Friday night.

In the first overtime session, Davies headed home a cross from junior Chelsea Spencer (Burlington, Ont.) for her career-high third goal of the season.

"I'm very happy with the team," head coach Peter Veltri said. "I think we played very well. We had our difficulties capitalizing on our opportunities, but we stayed with it. Eventually, we were able to capitalize on a chance and we won the game because of it."

Niagara only had a few scoring opportunities in the first half, but couldn't get anything past Jasper netminder Kara Davis. Junior netminder Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) helped to keep the game scoreless at the half by making two saves.

Niagara ramped up its offensive pressure in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Senior Michelle Emery (Colorado Springs, Colo.), sophomore Laura Kimoto (Scarborough, Ont.) and junior Caitlin Long (Tonawanda, N.Y.) all had their chances to dent the scoreboard in the second half, but all six shots in the second half were stopped by Davis.

Bowers made four saves in earning her third clean sheet of the season, tying her career-high set last season.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday, taking on Saint Peter's at 11 a.m.
