Women's Soccer Tops Saint Peter's, 4-1, on Senior Day

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team (11-4-1, 4-2-0) defeated Saint Peter’s (3-11-0, 0-5-0) 4-1 en route to its third straight conference win on Sunday afternoon.  Three seniors picked up points this afternoon on their senior day.

The 2008 senior day recognized four members on this year’s team: Aisha Eversley (Mississauga, Ont.), Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.), Jamie Giangreco (Penfield, N.Y.) and Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).  The seniors combined for a goal and three assist in their second to last home game at Niagara.

“I am happy for our seniors, who played a major role in our victory today,” head coach Peter Veltri said.

Niagara scored three minutes into the game when freshman Laura Kimoto (Scarborough, Ont.) scored from a difficult angle off of a rebound in the box.

Even though it was senior day, it was a junior that shined for the Purple Eagles. Junior midfielder Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) scored a brace with two spectacular long range goals in the 36th and 60th minute, respectively, and had an assist.

After the Peahens pulled one goal back, the Purple Eagles kicked up the offensive tempo leading to the fourth goal in the 77th minute.  Stephanie Gartley smoothly beat the keeper with a low shot to the far post with Lawrence and Eversley with the assists.

Giangreco started the second half and made three saves, including a diving save in the 81st minute.

Three minutes later, Gartley barely missed her 11th goal on the season when her shot hit the post.

“This was a very god weekend for us. I hope we can continue to build from this weekend games and secure a bid to the MAAC championship.”

The Purple Eagles are next in action on the road at Loyola on Friday, October 24.
