NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – First half goals from Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) and Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) were enough for Niagara (10-4-1, 3-2-0 MAAC) to defeat the Manhattan Jaspers (5-6-2, 2-1-1 MAAC) 2-0 at Niagara Field on Friday night.
"We played a very good first half and were able to make the most out of our chances," head coach Peter Veltri stated.
Niagara’s first goal came in the 24th minute from its leading point scorer Stephanie Gartley. The combination of Shaylyn Lawrence and Gartley connected for Gartley’s ninth goal of the season. Lawrence played a through ball past two Jaspers and Gartley smoothly hit it the ball past the keeper to the far post.
The Purple Eagles added to their lead in the 40th minute. Chiara Greco’s (Hamilton, Ont.) chipped pass found Lawrence and the senior scored with a shot just outside of the 18-yard box.
Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) made a key save late in the first half, off of a header in the box, to keep the Jaspers off of the scoreboard.
In the second half, Manhattan had most of the possession, but Niagara’s backline kept the Jaspers to long range efforts.
Gartley could have extended Niagara’s lead to three, but her far post shot barely miss the net in the 72nd minute.
"It was great to see two seniors score tonight," Veltri said. "It was a very important game and to have two of our leaders to play the way they did really showed that they can lead by example."
Niagara will have its Senior Day on Sunday, October 19 against Saint Peter’s at 1:00 p.m.
