NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Niagara (9-4-1, 2-2-0) shutout the Iona Gaels 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y. Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) had eight saves en route to collecting her second clean sheet on the season.
“We didn’t play our best today, but we’re glad to leave with the win and head back home,” head coach Peter Veltri said.
The Purple Eagles improved their MAAC record to 2-2-0 on the season.
Niagara’s Caitlyn Kilkenny (Seville, Ohio) put the Purple Eagles ahead after eight minutes for her second career-goal. Niagara kept strong possession and the pressure led to second goal in the game in the 15th minute. Holding midfielder Caitlin Long (Tonawanda, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the season after a feed from Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.).
The Gaels (2-13-0, 1-3-0) applied pressure periodically towards the Purple Eagles’ goal, forcing Bowers to make an acrobatic save halfway through the second period.
Niagara put the finishing touches on the game with an 89th minute goal from Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.), who also led the Purple Eagles in the game with five shots. Gartley had two assists in the game.
Niagara will next face conference foe Manhattan on Friday, October 17 at 1 p.m. from Niagara Field.
