FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara women’s soccer team (8-4-1, 1-2-0) lost to Fairfield (9-3-2, 2-1-0) 2-0 in its first conference road match of the season.
“Our game had no flow and wasn’t sharp tonight,” head coach Peter Veltri said. “We didn’t play to the best of our capabilities and they capitalized on their chances.”
The Purple Eagles fell behind 1-0 midway through the first half when Stags midfielder Ahna Johnson headed a shot off of a defender into the net.
Niagara pushed a lot of players forward, looking for the equalizer late in the second half, when Fairfield sealed the game with a goal with 12 seconds remaining until the final whistle.
It was a particular quiet night for the Purple Eagles attack. Niagara had 10 shots in the game with Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) and Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) with three each.
Niagara will play at Iona on Sunday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m.
